A pictorial look at Britain's George VI, the last King-Emperor. A shy and reserved man he came to the throne suddenly after the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. Although unprepared he proved to be a model monarch and a rock of strength and stability throughout the traumatic years of the Second World War. He encouraged troops in the field, honored heroes and gave courage to the civilians at home by sharing the dangers of the Blitz with them. His calm, steady presence gave Britons the inspiration to soldier-on, survive and eventually prevail over the Axis threat to their home and empire. A heavy smoker, he died in 1952 at the age of 56 from lung cancer.
